Is Mount Pilatus free with the Swiss Travel Pass?

No. The pass covers the bus, train and boat to Kriens and Alpnachstad in full, and gives 50% off the mountain sections: cogwheel, cableway and gondola. Rigi and Stanserhorn are the mountains that are fully free; Pilatus and Titlis are both half price. The Lucerne Travel Pass, the regional visitor pass, does cover Pilatus. How much time do I need?

Three hours door to door from Lucerne is the minimum for a Kriens up-and-back. A Golden or Silver Round Trip is 5–6 hours; the guided tour is scheduled at 5.5. On the summit, give yourself 60–90 minutes: 10 minutes up to Esel, 20 on the Dragon Path, an hour if you walk to Tomlishorn. Details on how much time to allow.

What is the cheapest way up?

Use whatever pass you already hold on the valley legs, then buy only the mountain section, or take the Silver Round Trip instead of the Golden, because the boat is the leg that adds cost. Children under 5 ride free on the self-guided tickets. I walk through the options on the cheapest way up page.

Pilatus or Titlis?

Titlis is higher (3,238 m), has year-round snow, a glacier cave and the Cliff Walk, and takes about 45 minutes by train plus 45 minutes of lifts from Lucerne. Pilatus is closer, has the steeper railway and the better round-trip logistics, and its rock is more dramatic. Mount Pilatus tickets, explained

I grew up in Kriens, at the bottom of the gondola, and I have guided the Golden Round Trip more times than the bus 1 driver has driven it. The questions people ask me at the valley station are nearly always the same four: which way up, how long, what does my pass cover, and why is the cogwheel closed. This is the answer to all of them, in one place.

The four ways to move

Pilatus has two sides and four kinds of transport. On the Alpnachstad side there is the cogwheel railway, opened in 1889, 48% at its steepest, about 30 minutes up and 40 minutes down. On the Kriens side there are the small four-seat panorama gondolas to Fräkmüntegg at 1,416 m (about 30 minutes) and then the Dragon Ride, a large glass cabin that reaches Pilatus Kulm in under four minutes. The fourth is the boat: Lucerne to Alpnachstad in 70–90 minutes on the scheduled lake ships. Bus 1 and the S5 train are the ordinary ways to the two valley stations, 15 and 20 minutes respectively. There is no cable car from Lucerne itself; the gondola starts in Kriens.

Golden versus Silver

Both names describe the same loop over the mountain: up one side, down the other, and back to Lucerne. The Golden Round Trip uses the boat between Lucerne and Alpnachstad; the Silver Round Trip uses the train. That is the whole difference. The Golden costs more because the boat is a longer, slower and nicer leg; the Silver is quicker and works better if you have a rail pass that already covers the train. Either can be done in either direction. I prefer the Kriens side up in the morning and the cogwheel down while the light is on the lake.

The guided version of the Golden loop leaves from Bus Parking Landenberg by Lucerne station and is scheduled at 5.5 hours. The self-guided Silver is a voucher you use at your own pace, with a cogwheel seat reservation built in. A reviewer named Erich put it plainly: in peak season you should make a reservation for the train. He is right, and the ticket does it for you.

What your pass actually covers

This is the question with the most wrong answers on the internet. Pilatus is not free with the Swiss Travel Pass. The pass covers the bus, the train and the boat to Kriens and Alpnachstad in full, and gives 50% off the mountain sections: cogwheel, cableway and gondola. The Half Fare Card, the GA, Eurail and Interrail also give 50% on the mountain. The Lucerne Travel Pass, the regional visitor pass, does cover Pilatus. Municipal day passes and SBB saver offers are not accepted. If you want a mountain that is fully free with the Swiss Travel Pass, that is Rigi or Stanserhorn, not Pilatus and not Titlis.

One more rule: you cannot stack a pass discount on top of a GetYourGuide product. The tour and ticket products on this site are full-fare bundles. So the honest choice is either a pass plus the bare mountain ticket bought on site, or one of the bundles here. The 2026 calendar

The cogwheel railway runs from 11 May to 29 November 2026. The boats run until 18 October. The gondola and Dragon Ride run all year except for revision closures on 30–31 March and from 19 October to 27 November. Put those three lines together and you get four seasons. June to September: everything runs, the full loop in either direction. May and October: the loop runs, with snow likely on top and, after 18 October, a lunch voucher instead of the boat on the guided tours. 19 October to 27 November: the cableway is closed, so the guided tours ride the cogwheel up and down. December to April: cogwheel closed, mountain reached from Kriens only, up and back the same way, with sledging at Fräkmüntegg. The dates by month are on the best time to visit page.

The one mistake people make

They book a Golden Round Trip for a December date. It cannot exist. The cogwheel is shut, the boat is shut, and what they will actually get is the Kriens gondola twice. The booking widgets will not sell you a date the tour does not run, but people plan around the name before they open the widget and are disappointed at the valley station. If your dates are between 30 November and 10 May, look only at the Kriens cable car return. The Dragon Ride and the view are the same and the terraces are emptier; you just do not get the railway.

How to pick

Staying in Lucerne, first visit, May to November, no wish to read timetables: the guided Golden Round Trip. Staying in Zurich with one day spare: the day tour from Zurich, which adds free time in the Lucerne old town and runs 10 hours. Holding a rail pass and happy to navigate: the Silver Round Trip, or a bare mountain ticket if you are driving to Alpnachstad or Kriens, since parking is included. Winter, or fewer than four hours: the Kriens cable car return. Two or more of you who want a guide to yourselves and lunch included: the private day, with the caveat that it has six reviews so far.

Whichever you choose, go in the morning. Clouds build on warm days by late morning, the summit is roughly 10 °C cooler than the city, and the webcams on pilatus.ch will tell you at breakfast whether it is worth going at all. Bring a windproof layer and closed shoes, even in July. Then check live dates and book the ticket that matches your date, not the one with the nicest name.
