The Pilatus Golden Round Trip: what it is and how to book it
The loop, in order
The guided tour runs the loop clockwise, mountain first and lake last. I prefer that direction, and not only because the guide has decided it for you: mornings are clearer on the summit, and a boat at the end of the day asks nothing of your legs.
- Bus Parking Landenberg, Alpenquai. Two minutes from Lucerne station. Arrive 15 minutes early with ID and your voucher. The coach takes you to Kriens; it is the same 15 minutes bus 1 would take, without the standing.
- Panorama gondolas, Kriens to Fräkmüntegg. Four-seat cabins, about 30 minutes, over the Krienseregg meadows. Fräkmüntegg at 1,416 m is where the toboggan run and rope park are; the tour does not stop for them.
- Dragon Ride, Fräkmüntegg to Pilatus Kulm. A large glass cabin, under four minutes, straight up the rock face. This is the leg that Keeley from Canada meant when she wrote that she would recommend the tour “even if you’re afraid of heights”. The Dragon Ride page has the details.
- Free time on the summit. Terraces, the Esel viewpoint ten minutes above the station, the Dragon Path gallery walk, the free Dragon World exhibition. Daisy from Australia found “plenty of time to explore”; most groups get the Esel and a terrace stop, and the Tomlishorn walk is too long for the schedule. Food is not included, so budget time for a restaurant if you want one.
- Cogwheel railway down to Alpnachstad. About 40 minutes, up to 48% gradient, in service since 1889. The cogwheel page explains why the carriages are built on a slant.
- Boat across Lake Lucerne. A scheduled lake ship, about an hour, ending at Cruise Pier 2 by the station. Michael from Denmark called it “a lovely cruise on the lake”, which is about right; it is the quiet leg.
Guided or self-guided
The guided tour buys you three things: someone who has done the loop hundreds of times keeping to the timetable, a coach to Kriens, and a person to ask questions of. Brett from the US wrote that the guide “made everything effortless”, and John from the UK got “plenty of information”. Bruno from France noted the live guide spoke French, which happens with some guides and not others; English is the guaranteed language.
What it does not buy you is flexibility. The tour has a fixed departure and a fixed summit slot. If you would rather sit at the Esel for as long as you like, or leave at 08:10 to beat the clouds, the self-guided Silver Round Trip voucher is the honest alternative, and it costs less because there is no guide, no coach and no boat in it. When the boat stops
This is where people get caught. The boat season ends on 18 October 2026. From 19 October the tour still runs, but the lake leg is replaced by a lunch voucher, and because the Kriens cableway goes into its revision from 19 October to 27 November, the mountain leg becomes cogwheel up and cogwheel down from Alpnachstad. On 28 and 29 November the cableway is back, so the tour goes up by cable car and down by cogwheel, still without the boat. After 29 November there is no Golden Round Trip until 11 May 2027, because the cogwheel is closed.
None of this makes the autumn tour bad. The cogwheel both ways is the ride many people come for, and late October light on the Alps is good. But if the boat is the reason you are booking, book before 18 October. My best time to visit page goes month by month.
Bring a warm layer even in July. Lucerne sits at about 436 m and the summit at 2,132 m, which as a rule of thumb is around 10 °C cooler before the wind. Snow on the terraces is normal into June. Closed shoes and sunglasses; the clothing page has the full list.

What is the difference between the Golden and Silver Round Trip?
One leg. The Golden Round Trip uses the boat between Lucerne and Alpnachstad; the Silver Round Trip uses the S5 train, about 20 minutes instead of 70 to 90. Everything on the mountain is identical.
Can I do the Golden Round Trip in reverse?
Yes, if you go self-guided: boat first, cogwheel up, cableway down to Kriens. The guided tour runs mountain first. I prefer the mountain first because the summit is clearer in the morning; see how much time to allow.
Does the Golden Round Trip run in winter?
No. The cogwheel is closed from 30 November to 10 May and the boat from 19 October, so the loop cannot be done. In winter the mountain is reached from Kriens only; the tickets page covers the year-round cableway return.
Is the Golden Round Trip discounted with the Swiss Travel Pass?
